Since inactive user name requests are such a popular thing, they now have their own address. I don't check this thread everyday, but judging by my replies tab, this is a popular request. Going forward, if you want to acquire an inactive user name, please send a request to:
username@twitter.com
It may take 3-5 days for you to get a response, since inactive user name requests come behind problem requests and bug reports in terms of priority, but we'll have someone looking at these daily. In your request, please include the following information:
*The user name you want
*Your existing user name, if you have one
*If you want to change your user name, or start a new account with the user name you're requesting.
Please note: Twitter Support will change your user name for you at the time of responding to the request so that the user name doesn't get taken by someone else. We will notify you by email when this happens.
Thanks!
Crystal

We generally have a 9 month rule; if a profile has been inactive for more than 9 months, we release the user name. In cases where the account has never been updated, Twitter can write the owner of the user name about releasing it, but results vary.

First I opened a help ticket in the old help system to get an inactive username. That sat with no response for over a month until twitter went to the new help system and the ticket disappeared.
I used the new help process to open a new ticket and got this response after about a week:
"Due to high ticket volume, Twitter Support is no longer releasing inactive user names unless in cases of trademark or copyright violation. We are working on releasing all inactive user names in the future, however, we will no longer manually release them on an individual basis."
Then I found this site and sent an email to the address that Crystal gave above and got this response:
"Due to high ticket volume, Twitter Support is unable to change usernames in cases of inactive accounts. Unless your user name issue involves Terms of Service violations, you'll have to wait until all inactive user names are released. We're working on a better long term solution for this."
This is all very unfortunate. I am well known many other places by the username "scrooks" which sits completely unused at twitter for more than a year, but now I can't claim it and am using the name "drthunder" instead. I guess I waited too long to make the request. I'm extremely bummed by this.
I’m totally bummed.

I'm looking for the username "shiva" (see my other comment below). The account has been inactive for over a year now, and yet the account remains. I'm trying to re-brand myself across web2.0 tools and would love that name. Plz Plz do something. -
Hi, there's a username: Rilee thathaven't update for over 9 month, will you release it? -
Rilee, plus submit a help ticket at http://twitter.com/help to ask for the name. -
how long have people had to wait for the username they wanted to be freed up? -
Well, the account was inactive for about 9 months.. and about 15 days after I posted my second comment in this thread, I got my account!! I must also say, that I was pretty active on twitter. -
@shiva -- that's good to hear and thanks for the reply. when you say you got your account, what do you mean by that, exactly? did your current account just change usernames automatically, did you just find the old account was deleted and you changed your name, did you find the old account to be deleted and you just signed up as it; what happened?
the one i am seeking hasn't posted in over a year. -
well, they replaced my username, which means that all the previous username's @replies, were not accessible. -
Hi, there's a username "Tommy" that haven't update for over 9 month. I would like to use it. Could you please release it ? -
Hi Tom. You'll need to submit a request through http://twitter.com/help or send an email request to support AT twitter DOT com -
Hi Crystal my request number is : "330807" can you please look at it? - I've awaited reply from Twitter support for a month. -
Hi Crystal, So how do we know how many months are left in inactivity? Ticket #109552 -
I have a client who is a prime candidate for a name request yet his tickets go deleted. The owner of the name tweeted 3 times in March to test his new IPhone and that's it. He hasn't done anything with the account 10 months and it just happens to be the name of a new Twitter Application that my clients company has spent a year developing. Now they will be trademarking the app name and could use some help getting this sorted out. We also tried sending to username@twitter.com which bounces undeliverable. Any help would be appreciated. -

Inappropriate? An account name I would sure like to have sure looks inactive, never updated at least, is there some kind of "flag as inactive" process?
-
Inappropriate?I need a the username "shiva" (my on-going effort to brand myself acros web 2.0 tools :) ), and I see that the account with that username has been inactive for over a year now. How do I raise a request for that name to be freed?! (my current username is shvelmur => impossible to pronounce (I know!))
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?E-mailed Twitter for a request for a account that is'nt updating for 11 months now.. Didn't heard anything... Would really love love to have that account
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?11 months is nothing, I've seen accounts MUCH older than that, sitting dormant. It's ridiculous. I'm not about to register some long sentence for a username because that's basically all that's left to register on Twitter.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I am aware of twitter's problem with scaling.. but they've gotta do something about this. I am sure, that by getting rid of accounts with no updates/activity, they can reduce the scaling problem (atleast to some extent).
Do let me know how I can request for a username that's been inactive since Feb 07!! Come on guys!
I’m frustrated
-
shiva, you might be better off submitting a help request at http://twitter.com/help -
Inappropriate?this does not bode well, since I am just starting this process. grrrrr.

Chuck - a help request will get this done. I obtained an inactive username within max. of 10 days from submitting a help request. -
how long did it take for it to happen for you. also, what happened exactly? -
Inappropriate?Hi, i'd like to register username "bandesz", which is taken, but was never updated. Is there a chance to get this name?
I’m hopeful
-
Hi. Try submitting a support ticket to ask for the username at http://twitter.com/help -
Inappropriate?I myself am interested in getting a username that hasn't updated yet (and randomly has one person following too). I heard about the 9 month rule when I shot an email to Twitter about this back in June. They replied and said the account was started a month ago (damnit - just missed it :-/) and said if the profile's inactive for 9 months, they can release it (An inactive account is when a person hasn't updated yet, right?). So it's been about 2 months so far since I emailed, 3 months since the username first started.. as long as the person doesn't update in the next 6 months (by Feb 2009 if my Math is correct), I'll be shooting an email to Twitter asking to grab their username.
I’m hopeful
-
I just got an email from Twitter today saying they had received my request and I got a link to the support ticket. It took a few days to get to them I Guess. I was worried at first. I just updated that ticket, making note that for the username I want, the person still hasn't updated any information yet. -
Inappropriate?i just sent in a request, too @ twitter.com/help. hoping it works!
I’m waiting with bated breath.

Inappropriate?I'm currently the owner of oldarmstrong and racecarjoe. Racecarjoe is my current Twitter account but I wanted to maintain a consistent brand across the web and change racecarjoe to oldarmstrong (still keeping my account). Of course, I would want to delete the oldarmstrong account. Can you folks at Twitter help me out? I've submitted a ticket already.
I’m slightly frustrated.
-
Inappropriate?Hi racecarjoe. You can do the name change this way:
1. Login to your "oldarmstrong" account. Go to http://twitter.com/account/settings and change your username to oldarmstrong_ (with an underscore). Logout of this account.
2. As quickly as possible, login to your "racecarjoe" account, go to http://twitter.com/account/settings, and change your username to "oldarmstrong". Logout again.
3. Log back into the first account (now with the underscore) and make sure to remove any devices that you may have added to http://twitter.com/devices. I also suggest that you change the email address to a throw-away email address so the email address that's tied to that account can be reused again elsewhere.
An alternative to deleting the account is to simply rename it "racecarjoe" (meaning, you just switched the usernames of the two accounts). This way, you can:
(a) still get any @replies that people may send to "racecarjoe"
(b) leave a final tweet on the "racecarjoe" account saying you're now only using "oldarmstrong"
A final note: when you change your username in Step 1 above, the username "oldarmstrong" becomes temporarily available and can be claimed by any user until you complete Step 2. For this reason, Step 2 needs to be performed as quickly as possible after Step 1.
I’m hoping this helps

Inappropriate?mdy, thanks for the reply. I wanted to do all of the above that you explained. The problem is, I can't log into my oldarmstrong account. I had reset my password a few days ago but when I click on the link to reset my password, I get the technical error page with the robot graphics. So there's nothing I can do on the oldarmstrong account. Any ideas? This is why I was hoping the Twitter folks could do something on their end.
I’m confident this problem might get resolved.
-
Ah! I didn't realize you had a password problem. I noticed from your reply above that you have already logged a ticket. That's the best course of action to take in cases like this. 8-) -
Inappropriate? On a related note, I really wish YouTube had a system like this for grabbing old screen names too. I've been wanting a screen name for a while and that person hasn't logged in since April 2006. Now, you can't even email YouTube support anymore.

Mine is 313339. Haven't heard anything on it. It was started August 12 2008, 04:48 PM, a few days after I first shot an email to Twitter. I did a follow up myself on it on August 13 2008, 05:28 AM, just giving an update that there was no activity yet for the username I was requesting. -
@gocubsgo: merged requests into a single request, 313807, and replied: I need to know what the inactive user name is, it's not mentioned in your requests :) -
@rilee: done! replied to your request, changed user name -
@nils replied to your request, need more information from you. -
@srizvi1 done! user name changed, replied to your request. -
@crystal you're awesome! I got the username I wanted. YouTube, are you learning? (http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to...)
Could I also check on one more name request I had done back in June (this is my personal one, the one you just helped me out with was for my site). I think I still have a few more months to go, but it would be nice to just get an update that I am in fact being considered for this username if this user continues to have no activity on this account? the request number is: 269062. I'm looking to know at what date I should reach out to Twitter to get this name (hopefully this user doesn't decide to start using before then!) -
Hi crystal, any chance to get a follow up on my last comment? I just wanted to ask the status of one more request: 269062 -
generally, accounts are removed after 9 months of inactivity. sometimes they aren't though, in which case we have to remove them manually. It looks like this other user name has a few months yet before the account can be taken down. we may modify this in our shiny new terms of service, coming (hopefully!) soon. -
Hey crystal, I thought I'd ask about this again. We're almost at 9 months and it seems there are new terms, but since I asked so long ago, maybe we could make an exception? I did the e-mail to username@twitter.com - here's the request id: 10981. So far, mhegge has responded and told me about the new terms, but as I said to him, since I asked so long ago, maybe we could still go through changing my username? -

Crystal, I sent you an @reply, but thought I'd mention my request here too (320430). The username I want only has 2 tweets total and the last one was over a year and a half ago. I opened a previous support request (access key 310855zhddgx), but it was closed without any response being sent to me. Thanks for your help! -
Hello Crystal, hope you can help me too, im also not sure about how to send you an @reply but my ticket number is 330304. The username I want has not been updated in over 15 months and want to register it as a new account, Kind Regards. -
Inappropriate? Thanks to Crystal's help (http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to... ), my name change went through and I was able to change my twitter username from "currentsitename_biz" (since you can't use "dots") to just the my "currentsitename." This is awesome for our brand identity.
I had a question though: Right when a username change goes through, there's this short time period where both the new account and the old are working and mirroring each other. Now, a few days later, my old account is dead, but a part of me wants to secure it to lock in our site's identity.
I think ultimately, if you have a website that you want to have a twitter account for, you would like to have "sitename", "sitename_com" (or _net, or biz, etc.), and "sitenamecom."
That doesn't seem like a squatting practice does it? If it's understood that this iisn't a squatting practice to deprive new users of name choices, would it be possible to have these accounts mirror each other like they do temporarily after a name change goes through?
I’m happy either way - my name change went through
-
In your shoes I would go ahead and create a new account that uses your old account's name. If someone else wants it, they can always request it through Twitter Support. -
The brief account mirroring was actually a bug, which we fixed. Once we change your user name, the old name is free for anyone to take. If you delete an account, the user name is taken out of circulation.
If you want to create a new account with the old user name as mdy suggested, it's sometimes helpful to make a post pointing to the old account with the new user name. You can always remove unwanted accounts at later date, which will remove the user name from circulation for up to 6 months. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for getting back to my Crystal and MDY. I guess I'll go ahead and sign up the old, now-changd username again and just make a post pointing towards the new username.
Perhaps this could be a feature respect to consider? this "bug" you fixed is what I would like to permanently happen. Again, it would really be nice to have a "username" be able to be mirrorred by username_com and usernamecom (I can't think of any other alternatives).
I’m still happy my username got switched
-
That's a good idea; right now there is no way to transfer or merge user data from one account/user ID to another. This would be an interesting way of facilitating that if necessary. I'll share that one with the team! -
Excellent, please do share with them. Hopefully it's something you guys can implement one day. You said there's no way to do this, but it seems to me that the bug you fixed was doing just this so maybe that could just be controlled. Anyways, thank you for the response and thank you again for the username transfer. I rated you guys a 10 over here: http://getsatisfaction.com/companies. Well deserved. -

Inappropriate?Susan Petrone:
See What are @replies? to learn more - though that's only useful if you already have a Twitter account (which I suspect you don't).
I would have sent @crystal an @reply on your behalf - but I noticed that the account whose name you'd like was last updated on 6th. June 2008 (only 6 months ago), so it wouldn't count as inactive for another 3 months yet.
So you'll probably need to choose another name. Perhaps you could simply append "_", or "08" for the year, or maybe something like "PA", "NY" or "UK" that indicates your location.
You might conceivably be able to contact the owner of the other account on the unlikely chance that they'd contemplate a change of name - a change which inevitably causes inconvenience and confusion to both users (and to their contacts). Even an apparently infrequent tweeter may actually exchange frequent Direct Messages (DMs) with other Twitter users. -

Inappropriate?Well, that sucks. I would much rather be told "We'll do it, but it might take 10 months to get to your request." than "Forget it."
So does this mean that we just need to keep trying to create a new account with our desired username until we finally discover that it has been released?
I’m disppointed
-
That's correct, they should put it in a queue instead of giving up immediately. I guess ZenDesk doesn't have a "postpone" option. That, or Twitter hasn't figured out how to use their help desk system (which is much more likely). -
Inappropriate?does anybody now how to proceed if there ́s indeed a copyright / trademark violation?
-
Inappropriate?Note that an account now officially becomes "inactive" after only 6 months of neglect (until recently, Twitter's deadline was 9 months).

I guess you could check that account's existence (maybe) daily, to catch the day when Twitter eventually releases a bunch of inactive accounts which includes the one whose name you'd like.
Or you might possibly try to acquire the name on the basis of Terms of Service issues - though that's probably a very long shot... -
A very nice person at twitter helped me out and switched my ID, but only because I had originally written in to ask so long ago. If you're asking now, don't get your hopes up. You rock, @delbius!!! -
I had an old ticket too--how long ago is "so long ago"? My original request was Nov 12, 2008. (I know, not THAT long ago, but still under the old help system.) -
I see, they've changed the rules privately but not publicly. That's nice. -
I wouldn't say they changed the rules. Someone there took pity on me and grandfathered me in under the old rules because I asked before they took place. Jeeze, you guys sure can be exceptionally critical about a service for which you pay exactly nothing. There are real people behind this free service, not autonomous robots following a rule set. -
There are real people behind the government, not autonomous robots following a rule set. Who cares if they use interrogation techniques beyond those permitted by the Army Field Manual? It they were robots following a "rule set", ok, but they're people, so the rules don't apply to them. -
That's a juvenile straw man. I don't have a choice in my government (unless I leave for some other country), so of course we should speak up about it. We _are_ the government and the government is us, if you will. Twitter is provided as a free service, take it or leave it. Make suggestions, offer constructive criticism, but don't get your panties in a wad if they don't do something you want. Just go away if it bothers you that much. I'm done here, this conversation has gotten past the point where it really has a point. Have fun with the last word. -
For a non juvenile strawman, see the topic about Ariel Waldman being harassed on Twitter and how she wanted them to obey their robotic "rule set" called the "terms of service" and get back to me. Or don't. -
It looks like I was around a week too late to request my username changed to an inactive account's. I don't know why Twitter is being like this and not letting us get our desired names. -
Inappropriate?I'm tired of this terrible argument about "free = no support". I guess it was OK for Twply to sell a large database of Twitter usernames and passwords because they weren't charging for their service? Also, I have my Twitter set to Japanese, so I get banner ads and hopefully that allows me to "complain" about the service because they're making money from my adviews.
I'm not alone in my opinion, just see this random commenter on mashable:
Just because something is free as one commenter stated, doesn’t mean one should not be upset with a company. Since all the time, money and effort people put into things like Linkedin, Facebook, Myspace and Twitter. Twitter also will someday add a paid option of some sort as a upgrade, I would bet my life on it.
Twitter is only free if your time is worthless.
I’m sad

Read the other posts, they are no longer doing this. -
Inappropriate?Well, the account mentioned here was occupied by a squatter just a couple of weeks ago, and that squatter had posted as recently as October 2008, so apparently Twitter is still turning over usernames to people. http://www.raphkoster.com/2009/01/26/...

Inappropriate?I would like to change my username, too.
When I open the page at twitter.com/username it gives me an error but when I whois it, it says "since Dec 2008". What does this mean?
Also, I heard that twitter would change the username if one owns the .com-domain. Is this true?
-
Inappropriate? What's happening about this Twitter? The account I want has been inactive since 2006! This is ridiculous, if you don't respond to username@ anymore and you're not automatically cleaning-up expired/inactive accounts; how do we approach reclaiming a username???
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Dear Twitter,
Please let us know what lies in store for the many inactive accounts!
We realize that there are a lot of username@ requests. Are you still working through those in order? Will there be a new means of requesting? Will inactive accounts just expire one day?
The inactive account I am requesting has never been updated, and seems to be inactive for over 1.5 years. My request number is 74572.
Thank you so much!
I’m hopeful

@higherhill We're no longer releasing individual usernames; rather, we're working towards releasing all inactive usernames.

@CMarzi84 We're currently only changing TM related names though we're working on releasing all inactive usernames back to available.

@andrew_holt We're in the process of working towards releasing inactive usernames but aren't doing individual username requests currently.

Inappropriate? Thanks for such a detailed response, mdy. :)
It helps, because the most recent response there is March 2nd, and tells us how they're dealing with the inactive accounts.
I suppose we just have to hope that we catch wind of the username release in good time!
I'm subscribed everywhere I need to be, I believe.

Inappropriate?I'm lost then. I read Twitter says they're working on releasing names, but I also read a post hear that inactive ID's of only 6 mo's is supposed to be released. The user name we want hasn't had ANY posts for nearly 1 & 1/2 years!
I haven't tried anything beyond seeing the name has been inactive.

Well apparently if you get a trademark, then they'll give you the name according to the third tweet mdy posted. -

Subject: Twitter: user name request
Due to high ticket volume, Twitter Support is unable to change usernames in cases of inactive accounts. Unless your user name issue involves Terms of Service violations, you'll have to wait until all inactive user names are released. We're working on a better long term solution for this.
* If your user name request concerns impersonation, trademark infringement, copyright, or another Terms of Service violation, please submit a request to the Terms of Service group via the web form. If you're unable to use our web form, please send your request to terms@twitter.com for help from our Terms of Service group.
Thanks!

Inappropriate?has twitter set a date for when they're going to release inactive usernames? i've placed my request, but from the responses above it sounds like i just have to be lucky enough to not have someone snatch it up before me...
-
Inappropriate?Maricel - Good luck on getting the name you want!!
I think the twitter people have the philosophy that you should be grateful with a free service - so shut up... at least that's what I think they believe!
If you check a couple blogs, and the twitter support - they've all but given up on helping with names. And as for the 9 month rule on names not being used... FAT CHANCE! I've checked a name that's had inactivity for over 1 & 1/2 years! What happened to 9 months?!!? -
Inappropriate?Well, I too just got an email about Twitter not doing anything about usernames that are just sitting there, being unused.
This is stupid. I refuse to use a service that forces me to have a complicated username AND twitter address (the username is actually very important to the Twitter service since it's used to generate your link) simply because I didn't sign up in the first two weeks it was online. The last offender was Gmail - a service that blocked general use for over a year and was invite only --- and by the time regular people could join EVERY decent address was gone.
I don't think Twitter's gonna scale very well in regards to this and this is only going to become a more widespread issue. Why not just change all Twitter names to:
www.twitter.com/johndoe@gmail.com
??? You know they could do it.... Grrrrr.....
I’m frustrated
-
Well, if the username is important to you, you might have it trademarked, and if that's the case, then you can indeed get the name. If not, you're just whiny. It's like whining about not being able to get twitter.com/x (not variable, just the letter x). -
Inappropriate?Thomas, you typically can't trademark a person's name, and that is what I suspect most people have issues with when they come here inquiring about this issue.
I don't belive I'm being whiny either because Twitter is just the latest in a long line of service providers that don't REALLY think through the most basic user things like...usernames for example.
For instance, on Gmail, why is this acceptable:
john.doe@gmail.com
...but this isn't?
john-doe@gmail.com
Or how about --- why are Twitter usernames limited to 15 characters...and on other sites there is no limit (or a far higher number)???
On Flickr, originally users used their e-mail addresses as their log-in names. Then, when Yahoo bought Flickr they forced all users to sign-in using their Yahoo email address/ID...and if they didn't have one, they HAD to make one.
Why is it that on YouTube usernames can't contain periods, dashes or underscores...but yet Gmail allows for periods...and Google owns YouTube?
You can't deny that the retarded ways most companies handle a simple thing like usernames is frustrating. For a person who wants to tell people they know (or build up a brand) by saying, "Check out twitter.com/johndoe", it's pretty dumb to think that for all other services you might have your username matching (easier for you AND visitors/readers) but yet you have to use "twitter.com/johndoe1996" and then explain that to everyone to change a common thing for ONE site, all because of dumb squatters and a bizarre username system that rewards only the extreme first adopters. -
I think you've misunderstood how Gmail's username system works. While you are correct that periods are "allowed" in usernames, they're purely decorative. That is to say, messages sent to johndoe@gmail.com, john.doe@gmail.com, and j.o.h.n.d.o.e@gmail.com will all point to the same inbox. -

I understand EXACTLY how Gmail's naming system works...and it's one of the most retarded things I've ever encountered. They shouldn't even include periods because they are useless. At least in Yahoo and Live there's a difference between john.doe@... and johndoe@... These "rules" Gmail, Hotmail & Yahoo created for their naming systems also are completely their call --- the first part of all email addresses can technically be (and are by default) case-sensitive (though most Mail providers disable this) and support a variety of symbols (like &) in addition to normal alpha-numeric characters. Gmail's naming system punishes people who didn't sign up for the earliest of Beta things. Go over to Picasa or even their web site creation area and try to use "JohnDoe"...even if a name isn't being used, you can't claim it as your own if you weren't the person who got "johndoe@gmail.com" originally...seriously, wtf? -
I don't think there's a difference between john.doe and johndoe on Yahoo, but there is between johndoe and john_doe. I'll have to look into it. -
Inappropriate? There are plenty of web services and sites that don't even have the option to grab an inactive username. Some don't even have the option to get a trademarked username. Twitter has its hands full with a lot of people whining right now about various things and it's still a small company. Wait it out, say interesting things on your current twitter account and make it valuable without the perfect snazzy username.
I’m highly amused
-
Inappropriate?Well, Twitter's inability to come up with a fair and simple system to handle usernames will eventually lead to a big scaling issue if the service gets any bigger (which they probably will...for awhile).
I don't think people realize this but subconsciously users feel like they are getting an inferior service than someone else if one person has to write "twitter.com/johndoe" vs. "twitter.com/johndoechicago99"...while a lot of people may not initially be turned off enough from using the service because of this, more experienced internet users (people who have used it regularly for a few years) will probably be very annoyed by it to the point of them feeling the strong need to change services in hopes of getting a better online identity when the opportunity comes up (and on the 'net, there's always an alternative if you don't like something --- which is why Myspace replaced Friendster and Facebook replaced Myspace).
That's a big factor that helped Gmail grow so quickly...it wasn't that it was so much better than Hotmail/Yahoo...it simply gave users a fresh, clean start with an identity on something central to their online time. If Twitter ever hopes to be something "central" to all 'net users, they better find a better way of handling this, otherwise the only people who will benefit are the earliest of adopters.
That, and eventually people's usernames will resemble TinyURLs with a gibberish set of characters and numbers mixed together. -
Yes, the inability to get the name you want without adding numbers has totally destroyed AOL Instant Messenger, nobody uses it! -
I think you are putting your own desires here over what is the real reality. The younger the user is, the less chance they give a hoot about their user name. Watch someone less than 18 (25?) set up a new account on a web service, and you'll see that their _first_ attempt will be something wacky with numbers in it. They don't care about getting twitter.com/johndoe, they'd rather have twitter.com/snckwit778. And they're certainly not going to think it's an inferior service because of it. As Thomas commented, see AOL. It's thriving and there certainly aren't any "good" names left there.
There's no way to offer everyone a user name that is a direct reflection on their real name, or even some other desired name. That's just the way it is when you have millions of users. The people who have been using the Internet all their young life don't even think about it, they just naturally deal with it. We older people need to learn to adapt. If you're not fast enough with a service to snag the name you really want, move on and snag some other name and get over it.
People will not move away from a social service like twitter just because they couldn't get the handle they wanted. Very few care about such things. People will only move away when there's another service that is an order of magnitude better and has been around long enough to get social momentum going.
Gmail grew quickly because it offered what seemed like unlimited storage at the time when Hotmail and Yahoo had relatively very small limits. That and the fact that Google itself was (and is) a hot property.
[Note that the issue of _abandoned_ names on Twitter being released for reuse is a totally different topic and I'm not commenting on that.] -
Inappropriate?I know what's driving me bonkers is the fact that I have to put the "_" in my name because someone who hasn't updated in almost a year, with NO friends, and ONE follower, with ONE update has it, while I update at least once a day, but almost always more than that.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?ScottC and Sarah...
I completely agree. Users that are new and actually using the service should be given priority. I'm still baffled as to the things I read that supposed inactive accounts are SUPPOSED to expire.
Regardless if this is a free service or not - I wish the creators of Twitter would actually stick to their own policies!! How are people supposed to know what to expect if the makers don't even play by their OWN rules?!? -
Inappropriate?I'm sad to see that Twitter apparently has no plans to service requests for inactive usernames. I sure would like to go by @jeffg here rather than @jgehlbach, but the current holder of @jeffg does not respond to e-mail and has not updated since creating his account over two years ago. Many of my followers know me as "jeffg" from mailing lists and Freenode IRC, and I've had to turn on all at-replies because some people forget that my Twitter handle is different.

Inappropriate?yet another user here that doesn't have a twitter account because the username I want is taken and inactive. I'm ready to register but the name that I use for virtually everything is taken.. and for 3 months its been said they're going to release all inactive... doesn't look like that's happening... especially now when the community is building so fast, they should clear room. I was thinking of just messaging the user with my gf's twitter account but im worried the person will say no and start using the account in spite.. so I just sit here like the rest... with my fingers crossed constantly checking the username url waiting to see it say that the page doesn't exist... but it never happens *sigh*

"Twitter is not currently releasing inactive user names. Unless your user name issue involves Terms of Service violations, you'll have to wait until all inactive user names are released. We're working on a better long term solution for this, and we should have more news soon."
Anyone have any idea what "soon" means? This inactive user is getting a lot of @replies intended for me.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Seems Twitter stopped answering this type of requests 5 months ago saying that they plan to release all the squatty usernames at once. Wondering if there's any news on this. Has anyone managed to put their hands on one of these usernames recently? Or is everybody just waiting?
I’m frustrated
-
I added a web clipping of the username I want's page to my OS X dashboard, so every time I open the dashboard, if it looks the same (blank user picture and username) I know there's been no change. The instant I see something different pop up I'll jump. -
Hehe. Good strategy. ;) Though it doesn't really help with actually recovering the username. -
I havent asked yet but as i can see many ppl have so i dont think its worth trying. I read somewhere that the release date for names was like..6 months. Now its 9 months?! Must have mis-read, but it still sucks because for one name im waiting for, its been already that long. Ugh. -

Twitter is currently working on releasing all inactive user names, and is not releasing inactive accounts on an individual basis at this time unless in cases of Terms of Service violations.
If it's a terms of service violation (copyright infringement, trademark infringement, impersonation, breach of privacy, etc.), the suggested steps for filing requests are described on a different help page, which you'll find here

Inappropriate?Since it appears Twitter doesn't have the time and personnel to handle these types of requests it would help if there was a method for us/me to send a message to the twitter user's email to ask if they would relinquish the name. It could be set up by Twitter so their user email would remain anonymous.
-
Inappropriate? We're quite angry at Twitter right now.
We've opened 3 support requests at help.twitter.com, each one asking the same thing, that our company name, squatted by some user (has had NO updates for 26 weeks and only follows 2 spam accounts) be released to us.
Each time, the "process" took almost 2 month, and abruptly ended with the ticked being closed by Twitter, with no resolution provided and being "marked as solved". This is very frustrating, especially since the last ticket gave us a glimpse of hope telling us to register an account and that as soon as this was done, the name would be transferred to us.
Of course nothing has been done and we are more and more thinking about going the legal route.
I’m furious

Inappropriate?oh. you should report the account as copyright. what is your company name?
1st you got to report.

Inappropriate?Romain Dardour / JinHanNeo
Sorry to burst your guys' bubble...but since Twitter is a private company you'd have little to no chance in court trying to "force" them into giving youa specific username. The fact is that you (or your client) waited too long to join Twitter and all of the good accounts are gone. I'm just as upset as you that Twitter is doing nothing to release old usernames that are no longer used...but unless the account in question is falsely impersonating you or your client and causing brand confusion, I don't see why your situation is any more serious than any of the other usrs who have complained here first...LONG before you started writing.
In other words, Twitter's retarded and won't help...so suck it up and move on. Cybersquatting is everyone's nightmare now since most services don't charge for service (therefore any random person can grab as many good account anmes as they want w/o fear of owing a dime).
I’m as upset as everyone else
-
Inappropriate?im not asking twitter to let me have a dead account user name. im just telling him if he wants to use a username he needs to wait for 9 months. its stated in the 1st post. i guess.
twitter has made bring improvements. im perfectly happy with the way twitter works.

Inappropriate?JinHanNeo -- a lot of us have been waiting a lot longer than 9 months. As far as I know, Twitter has never deleted an inactive account, ever.
I’m impatient
-
Inappropriate?I gave up SIX months ago! Don't bother asking to have a dead account - it wont happen! The "nine month" is a myth, regardless of where and what official posting you may have read... forget it. And there is absolutely no support what so ever with Twitter. They make it VERY apparent you are using a FREE service, so don't expect a thing in return!
I'm sure, eventually, Twitter will get sold off, or merged with Facebook as it's been suspected and rumored to do in one fashion or another for about the last nine months. However, I wouldn't suspect support then, either! They... Twitter, and Facebook are only out for themselves. Get use to the new cyber way, of immature, pimple faced CEO's!
I’m given up on any maturity from Twitter.

If your user name request concerns impersonation, trademark infringement, brand squatting, copyright, or another Terms of Service violation, please submit a request to the Terms of Service group ...
Looks like we're out of luck for now. I'm not sure what sort of 'better long term solution' they could have, nor when 'soon' will be. Oh well. -
Inappropriate?I replied to this thread 6 months ago.. and was like you, if u scroll up you can see my post, I was able to get my name, I emailed tech info.. letting them know "I was in the process" of copyrighting my handle and would like to use it on twitter since it was idle... took about half a week but somebody from tech released it and emailed me to use it. So tell them you're copyrighting it and they'll help you out.

I hope this works and that it wasn't a mistake to start with a more cordial email before I read this. -
Inappropriate?I work for a large company (1000+ employees, offices across the US), and our company name was taken by someone who has not posted in nearly a year.
In the few posts they did make, they did not try to impersonate the company, so we have no grounds to get the name through legal channels.
But, even though Twitter has hinted at some sort of corporate usage that they may or may not develop, they are just as unresponsive to our company's request to release the inactive username.
It seems to be pretty hopeless at this point. We have given up on developing a strategy around Twitter. If they ever do try to create a fee-based service for corporate accounts, we're not going to be there. I've set up an account on Identi.ca, which actually has more features than Twitter.
I’m making plans without Twitter
-

Inappropriate? You guys above are lucky. My ticket keeps on being deleted and I'm getting really (upset) because I must have wanted to change my name since, February and wasted time trying to contact the guy who originally has the name I want, and since he was unresponsive I then turned to Twitter.
When Twitter didn't respond, I left it, but I'm attempting to do it now and seeing that they've stopping do that is upsetting, but I'm going to continuously try.
If they did it for all those people above, why not me? :(
I’m unhappy.

Inappropriate? One of my clients has the same issue. A squatter created an account nearly a year ago, made 2-3 posts to test his new IPhone and never returned. His account name happens to be the name of the twitter app my clients company has developed and we've been trying unsuccessfully for nearly 2 months to get the name rerolled for us to use. It's frustrating to say the least.
I remember coming across a thread where Crystal was actively helping people to resolve such issues, however its been lost to me. Can anyone throw me a bone on this matter?
TIA

Inappropriate?I'm having same problem, sent email ( received ticket no. 788713 ) and just realized that problem has been marked as solved / closed but no changes yet.
What should I do next? -
Inappropriate?Dear Twitter,
It would be enormous help if I was able to use an inactive account, that has been inactive for over 9 months. My company is called DAVIT, and we have a trade name and Business name registered as DAVIT, and including davit.ie as domain.
I have sent in a recent request Ticket 829217 Twitter: user name request. #
I am unsure if there is a policy change or that inactive username accounts will be released at a specified period. I am unsure if direct contact with the Current user is advisable. Since my experience of cybersquatting of my previous domains endured considerable expense and inconvenience from squatters I rather not go through the whole experience again.
Thank you for your service and support

Inappropriate?Twitter has an "inactive usernames" help page here:
http://help.twitter.com/forums/26257/...
Key point: "Due to high volume, individual requests for inactive usernames are not being taken at this time."
However, Twitter does take action when the username is a trademark violation or a case of copyright infringement.
To quote: "Twitter Support, specifically the Terms of Service group, handles Terms of Service violations. If your username request concerns a potential violation, check out our Terms of Service and Rules guidelines to find out what to do. Our help pages for impersonation and trademark policies have additional instructions and information we will need to process your request." -
Inappropriate?I can understand that there must be a torrent of requests for inactive account ownership changes. At the same time the TOS specifically states that inactive accounts will be deleted after 9 months, but I've yet to see this happen. This particular account has now been inactive for 11 months and no deletion. It seems to me a fairly easy task for such a high profile service to auto delete the hoards of inactive accounts on the 1st day of the 10th month. This would not only serve the thousands of active tweeters looking for such names, but also free up what must be terabytes of resources.
On this point I must also say that 9 months is overkill. If an account goes inactive for 3-6 months it'd be a safe bet the holder isn't using the service.
IMHO
I’m perplexed
