downloading MPEG2 for use on our channel
Several video servers have programs for seniors available for Download. The download is an mpeg2 file that I burn to DVD. We've had trouble ripping these to our Tightrope server, and getting them to play on our Channel. does anyone have experience with this?

Inappropriate?Which MPEG-2 format are the videos BEFORE you burn them to DVD? MPEG-2 Program Stream? MPEG-2 Transport Stream? MPEG-2 Elementary Stream with separate audio?
When you burn them to DVD, is it as a data file, or as DVD-Video?
If they're already in MPEG-2 Program Stream format, you should be able to add them to your CableCast server without going to DVD first.

I have been doing MPEG 2 Program stream format but it seems that the programs are hugh files. Is there something in compressor that would make the program smaller? -
Inappropriate?Hey Bonny,
What type of server are you using?
If your using an SX server you could use a different file type that offers better compression such as H.264. There are training videos on TRMS website that offer instructions on how to export these videos from both Apples Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere:
http://www.trms.com/community/trainin...
If your using an VS server than your limited to using MPEG-2. MPEG-2 file sizes are primarily determined by there bitrate. At my staiton we use an average bit rate of about 6-7 Mbps and our file sizes are about 2 - 2.5 Gigs for an hour long program.
You can lower a file size by using a lower average bit rate, but you don't want to go to low or you'll noticed decreased video quality.
Hope this helps.

That doesn't really tell us anything since "huge" is a completely relative term. Huge compared to what?
If you shoot to DV, DVCam or DVCPro tape (all DV25 codecs), the resulting file size is about 13.3gb per hour. MPEG-2 is more highly compressed than the DV25 codec and as Ray has already stated, the file size/per hour of footage will depend on the bit rate used for the compression process.

Inappropriate?Lou, I have the SX2 server. I need to compress to mpeg 2 because it is the only format that TRMS will use for the VOD. When I compress a 5 minute video it ias about 6gigs using Compressor program stream. When I record directly to the SX server the file size is 1/4 the size of the Program stream Mpeg 2 file.

Inappropriate? What application are you using to create the MPEG-2 Program Streams and what settings are you using?

Inappropriate?Hey Bonny.
A five minute video taking 6gigs is HUGE! :)
Here are some screen shots for setting up a FCP Compressor setting.
1) In the Settings window hit the '+' and choose MPEG-2

2)Give your new setting a name. I usually use "tightrope"
3)Change the usage to generic (this might not exist in older versions of compressor. Can't really remember)
4)Important. At the bottom check the "multiplexed MPEG-1/Layer 2 Audio.
5)Choose "Program Stream"

6)Hit the "Quality Tab" You can adjust your bitrates here. Older versions of compressor I don't think tell you the estimated file size here. But if you use the same settings as I do you should get roughly the same file sizes.

Depending on what eversion of compressor your running, these instructions should be pretty accurate. Let me know if you have any issues.
