While the console suggestions (Wii, PS3, Xbox 360) that have come up are admirable and definitely desirable, they are far from the most achievable. The amount of hoop jumping involved to get something like SeeSaw on those systems (bearing in mind that the iPlayer hasn't even been made available on the Xbox yet, thanks to Microsoft) is huge.
In the short term, to build awareness and get SeeSaw out there, I think the open platforms: Media Center, Boxee, and the iPhone/Android are a much better bet. In theory there's nothing standing in the way of releasing on those platforms.
Like Alfie said: there's obviously huge demand for SeeSaw beyond the browser. Boxee's current content offering is limited to the iPlayer for UK users, and SeeSaw could massively expand that if it supported the platform. There are already multi channel web tv solution for Media Center, although I agree I'd love to see SeeSaw on there as the user experience of each plugin so far has left something to be desired.

One vote for Wii.
Or even without device specific apps; what about going down the same design route as http://bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen ?
Big fonts, menus easy to navigate from a 10 foot distance etc. If the seesaw web site was designed with this in mind, then it is possible to configure a remote control to do most navigation (only the embedded Flash player needs mouse movement and even this can be simulated with a remote control). Currently the seesaw web page design is a barrier to getting seesaw into the living room, thus reducing the potential market.
I’m looking forward to redesigned web site

Inappropriate?Further to the Playstation compatability question, I have one for Tversity on the Xbox (or indeed PStation). An xml feed with the relevant media containers (mp4 format) would be absolutely ideal for Tversity on any console. I can't quite see why this would beat out my existing iPlayer integration through Tversity, but if 4oD could be brought in through Seesaw then that would be aces.

Inappropriate?Although I understand that the lack of flash support for Android OS (one day Adobe might pull there finger out and catch with the rest of us) My question is simple, will you be launching and Android App or Widget to support your services. The Beeb Player and You Tube are already in the market, any thoughts on joining them sometime very soon ? Using Google Nexus One for your info..

Inappropriate?Hi,
I know services such as BBC iPlayer, Youtube and Demand Five work through the PS3's web browser. When I tried to test SeeSaw on there I found the login screen wasn't functioning.
Are there any plans for a Playstation compatible/optimized version?

Inappropriate?SeeSaw is a great idea, but it's currently mouse driven and not terribly TV friendly. It would be great to see a Boxee App for SeeSaw (http://www.boxee.tv/) or a Windows Media Center application. With the Boxee Box being launched this year, SeeSaw could find its way into a number of homes if they worked with Boxee.

+1 for the Windows Media Center application! -
Wii and Boxee would be excellent platforms. -
+2 Windows Media Center - this is the BIG hole as far as I am concerned in all of the streaming service this site gets content from, if it could be plugged here that would be great! Not only because it would bring official support to WMC but a single app to aggregate all free catchup tv in the UK would be better than five different ones for each of the broadcasters. Think SkyPlayer plugin style :-) -

Quite agree about WMC ......please? -
Speaking from the Linux side.. how about open plugins for XBMC, MythTV etc? -
Inappropriate?iPhone/iPod would be my #1 choice, but that's purely because that's the only one I have :) and obviously the tech element would be more challenging, DRM-wise. Otherwise, Playstation, Wii or XBox would be awesome - purely 'cos it means one less cable having to trail to the TV!
-
Inappropriate?Android support would be great. BeebPlayer is a great app for Android, why not contact the developer David Johnston (http://posterous.com/people/168zHYzRAjv),
Full Flash support is due very soon to Android, I expect we will know more after the Mobile World Congress later in the month.
A standalone app is very appealing, I find the interface in Beebplayer is easier to navigate than directly on the BBC iplayer webpage. -
Inappropriate?Windows Media Center (I realize third parties are already starting to make plugins)
Xbox (because flash doesn't stream over MC Extenders) -
Inappropriate?Forget the external boxes - the future is TV widgets. With more TV's allowing you to plug an ethernet direct into your TV there is an oppotunity to bypass all the other devisies, strike deals with the TV manufactures and go direct. People get bored of plugging things in - do provide a service direct to TV which means they no longer need to!

Inappropriate?will you create an iphone app that allows you to play streamed shows 'offline' much like spotify does with music?

Inappropriate?iPhone and Wii for me please. Even better if it could stream over 3G (rather than wifi-only like BBC iPlayer). Or better still - load content (e.g. one episode) for offline viewing on the tube.
-
Wii please also :) so I can watch seesaw on the big screen! -
Inappropriate? My votes are for iPhone and PS3. I currently use the iPlayer on both of these although I wish the BBC would develop a standalone iPhone app in which you can download the programmes for offline viewing. Maybe something worth considering for SeeSaw?

Inappropriate? So really when you look at these responses one thing is brilliantly clear: People don't want a new platform, and they don't want to watch TV through a monitor/browser. Unless that browser is through their console. That's quite a big insight to get for your service, considering your current browser-centric approach.
-
Inappropriate?Wii please.

Inappropriate?Hi,

I have no idea what Boxee is, the more hoops the average user has to jump through the less likely they are to use it. So keep it simple to what the average joe already has connected to their TV. -
Boxee makes internet TV on your TV easy ie it reduces the number of hoops you have to jump through to watch what you want to watch irrespective of source and format - Google it ! -

Inappropriate?iPhone/ipad/ipod touch :)
A native app, not a web app PLEASE :) -
Inappropriate?PS3 please
-
Inappropriate?Wii and ipod touch please!
-
Inappropriate?I should add in reference to the above that Boxee is an open media centre which is gaining ground and it's what I recommend to anyone looking to connect the Internet to their TV for the first time. SeeSaw should be pushing to be on the default install on the Boxee Box - what most 'real people' will first experience Boxee through. For similar reasons, the iPhone's user friendly interface and tech savvy userbase will allow SeeSaw to grow through recommendation and Show-and-Tell due to the device's portability. Mainly though, SeeSaw needs to be available on TVs and in your hand, in as many simple ways as possible so it pushes itself as a brand. If iPlayer can be on Virgin Media and Freesat, why not SeeSaw? (PS none of thus should occur at the cost of content - without content SeeSaw is nothing!)

Inappropriate?Get yourself on STB's Freeview/TUTV/BTV/SKY/FREESAT..... The service will only then be a big draw to me. I don't really want to watch TV on my laptop.
-
Inappropriate?Seems TV and Mobile is your answer - Consoles, STB's and mobiles. Aim at getting a Wii channel for accessibility, PS3 browser compatibility, mobile compatibility (the most difficult likely to be iPhone, but a good source of early adopters who are influential in the services they use). STB's are an annoying sticking point as they're less than standardised though the Freesat spec should allow for a reasonable service. Xbox is not massively likely as their current agreement with Sky is likely exclusive. The more platforms the better -especially ones people are likely to demo to others.
I’m happy
-
Leave iPhone for now. If considering developing for smartphones then look towards Android. This is the largest and fastest growing open platform for smartphones. Not only that but Android is now appearing in tablets, laptops and even stb's. Being an open environment makes it very easy to develop for and to get published. Android Market Place is your distribution channel for your app. As an early adopter SeeSaw would be a rising star in an exponentially growing user market. -
I think it'd be difficult to ignore Nokia's large installed userbase too... Multiplatform is definitely the best approach to mobile to ensure the best coverage of the population. -
Inappropriate?@Malcolm Bell - your Laptop does likely have TV out - usually via s-video which you can easily pick up a cable from Maplin to utilise SeeSaw on the big screen. Most Laptops do these days :)
I’m confident
-
Thanks for that Andi M but I have no interest in plugging/unplugging my laptop into my TV. Mrs wouldn't be happy with a laptop in the living room and neither me nor the mrs would want to be pressing buttons on the computer to watch tv..... much better a STB, a remote and a box under the telly. -
Inappropriate?Project Canvas is a must, if apple TV ever lets apps other than through Boxee that should be looked at.
Easier it is for me to watch through a TV the better, especially if the content grows.

Inappropriate?Ok, so results so far....
iPhone - 24%
PS3 - 20%
Wii - 17%
xBox - 10%
Boxee - 8%
Media Centre - 7%
Android - 4%
Then all on 1%; TV Widgest, WDTV, Symbian, Freesat, Canvas, Apple TV.
Total, 71 votes. (I only counted the first two suggestions where people suggested multiple devices - that was what we asked for).
Of course, popularity is one thing (and this isn't exactly the most robust sample) but we'll have to consider many others when deciding our next steps such as scale of install base, type and availability of development technology, DRM etc...
As and when we make decisions about this, we'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, keep the suggestions coming.
thanks -
Boxee runs on Windows, MacOS and AppleTV, so the potential total market is pretty large. -
Inappropriate?PS3 without a doubt. It's the only serious contender for the all-in-one living room box, purely because it already has iPlayer, VidZone, Blu-Ray, local network streaming,A movie store, youtube, all in addition to it's fantastic gaming capabilities and silent, subscription and hassle-free operation.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Playstation 3...
Also, the ability to download (with adverts) so that I can watch them in my own time and control them with my PS3 remote like I would a Blu-Ray rather than in an internet browser. -
Inappropriate?Even you tallied everything up now, I think that you should do the Wii and other phone platforms than the iPhone.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Service looks awesome. PS3 support is essential - who wants to watch tv on their computer when there's a box under the big screen which could do the same? :) In terms of mobile support, a Blackberry app would be wonderful - I'm sure the iphone OS will get first priority as usual, but it's worth remembering that the Blackberry OS still accounts for a larger potential audience...
-
Inappropriate?Give it it's own Wii channel, iPod/Phone seems an obvious choice too.
It's only fair to go for all the home consoles, giving support to one but not the other wouldn't be a good thing to do. -
Inappropriate?Wii and a freeview/set top box. Dont really care about small screens like iphones - maybe for younger people with better eyesight than me. Would like a download option for offline viewing too.

Inappropriate?Wii is the most sold console in the UK so it makes sense to develop something for it.
I would forget for the moment things like boxee and similar. I love these new boxes (I own myself a WD TV Live), but their penetration are not so important. Most of us with similar hardware are already streaming movies from some network computer or NAS. If there was some standard to develop so each make can do its own link that could make sense. After all the ads are on the feed not on the webpage so you want to distribute your content, you don't care on where it is being displayed... but of course it makes sense to take Seesaw out of the browser and into devices like iPods or TVs.
-
Inappropriate?XBMC, Wii, and Android would be great.
Even better if a lightweight DLNA server could be installed onto Nas devices (or even better included within Twonky Server) so that any DLNA device (TV's, DVD Players, Media Centres etc) could access the content.
One "must" is the ability to fast forward and rewind at leisure - and ideally without being forced to watch the ads again just to see the last five minutes!
Oh, and I nearly forgot - FreeviewHD/Freesat support are a must for those devices supporting networked content!
-
Inappropriate?xbox 360 and ps3, at least on the ps3 browser and windows media centre so I can watch it on my tv without having to connect it to my pc -there is no digital tv reception where i live so this would allow me to watch tv other than iplayer on my tv
-
Inappropriate?Would it not be better to release an API so that other software developers can implement seesaw support into their applications? Then other developers can create their own MediaCenter/MediaPortal/XBMC etc plug-ins
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Another vote for PS3
-
Inappropriate?Thinking from a marketing point of view I would go as far as to say the Wii and *Android based phones would be the two platforms that would likely see the most Seesaw use - basing that off total number of units sold and the current market.
However supporting all consoles would give you a wider audience range and the site would certainly see more usage through out the day. But as stated this year the market is expecting to see a sales increase of Internet TV's which may cut useage so perhaps the idea of porting to the ever increasing market of handheld devices is a step in the right direction.
But all that aside I would say I would certainly see more use watching programs dueing a lunch break or when I'm on a bus with a handheld device than on any of my consoles.
*I don't work in the phone market so the UK base sales may lean in favor of the iPhone seeing as the iPod touch could be included.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?Does not work on PS3 browser. Therefore it's useless to us, as we don't all watch catchup TV crowded around a tiny laptop screen.

Update: Topic was merged I'll copy & paste the response I listed:
If your TV is able to be used as a monitor (LCD / Plasma should work fine) you should be able to connect the laptop to your TV and watch programs that way.
However it all depends on the power of the laptop. I'm not all that hot on mobile hardware so this may not be a viable option should the laptop have an Intel GMA integrated GPU. If it has an Nvidia Geforce mobility (Ion included) or an ATi Radeon Mobility GPU you should have no problem streaming on a TV!
Around the back on most popular brands of Laptops you should see a female VGA port. Using a VGA cable you can connect that to your TV in order to use it as a monitor. Note this can sometimes be found which ever side the disk tray isn't.
Quite a few retailers also offer VGA to Scart cables and like the pure VGA ones they are really quite cheap. Often below the £6 mark.
(If anyone has tried this with an Intel GMA card and is able to stream from laptop to TV flawlessly could you please respond to this as confirming it would handy to know, thank you) -

-
Inappropriate?@Dragon-RD
iPlayer useage on PS3 is FAR higher than it is on Wii, simply because it's a more capable system.
99% of Wii owners have never down anything with their Wii aside from Wii Sports and Wii Fit, and a large proportion of those Wii systems are just gathering dust in the back of the cupboard (I know at least 70% of the Wii owners I know, this is true). -

This would be a maaaajor success as you can't access 4od or demand 5 on the iPhone, nor can you cache iPlayer content.

Inappropriate? The PlayStation 3 is a sizeable source of traffic to the iPlayer website, and the Wii only accounts for a quarter of that traffic, if priorities are still open for debate, don't let the install base fool you. I understand the Xbox 360 through not having a web browser will be far more difficult to sort without going through a specialist app

Maybe so the programmes you are currently following come in their own little box, that way it would be so much easier to know if there were new episodes of what you watch instead of searching each time to see if there is a new one out.
I’m wishing it was easier to find the programmes I like!
