If you know the username of the account, you can try performing a password reset by entering the username in this form: http://twitter.com/account/resend_pas...

Doing so causes Twitter to send a password reset link to the email address that was used to create the account.

If your email administrator has access to the email account of the employee who left the company, they can forward a copy of the password reset email to you and you can complete the password reset process and get back into the account.

If that doesn't work, filing a support ticket might help: http://bit.ly/twicket

Key point: "Due to high volume, individual requests for inactive usernames are not being taken at this time."

However, Twitter does take action when the username is a trademark violation or a case of copyright infringement.

To quote: "Twitter Support, specifically the Terms of Service group, handles Terms of Service violations. If your username request concerns a potential violation, check out our Terms of Service and Rules guidelines to find out what to do. Our help pages for impersonation and trademark policies have additional instructions and information we will need to process your request."
