I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad Thunderbird 3 initial experience.

We had over a hundred thousand testers, but clearly some bugs didn't get identified along the way. As you may know, we've already released a version 3.0.1 with a substantial set of bug fixes, and we're working on a 3.0.2 with some more high-priority fixes (including the ordering-of-names bug). It sounds like you hit more than your fair share of those bugs than most of the million+ users we have on Thunderbird 3.

I'm concerned about one thing in particular, which I want to clarify -- your last paragraph seems to imply that you think people pay for Thunderbird. I hope you didn't pay for it -- that would be a case of fraud, as Thunderbird is always free. Thunderbird is delivered as a public service by a large set of contributors, most of them unpaid.

I'm hopeful that we'll be able to regain your trust in the future, as those bugs get ironed out.

No need to apologize at all, thanks for the feedback. I'm glad it seems like we have a fair resolution.

Thanks for the input. Right, we try smtp/pop/imap ports, looking first for secure connections, and failing back to less secure ones upon failure. I _think_ it's fairly similar to what iPhones do, fwiw.

I think your exception scheme sounds right!

Can you tell us a bit about what your security system is, so we can adjust our systems based on its criteria? (Maybe we can just add a short pause, etc.)

I've asked for that patch to get back-ported to the version of Gecko that we use in TB3 -- we'll see what happens.
