A comment on the question "Thunderbird 3 Pop vs IMAP" in Mozilla Messaging:

Seconded. What genius in the UI team came up with this crap?

I use IMAP myself because I need the mobility, but I just spent an hour walking one of my relatives through setting up a POP account because she wanted her local archive independent of the server. Guess what, IMAP offers no advantages to an account accessed from one machine, and POP is actually superior for offline storage.

"Designing for the 80%" and "idiot-proofing" ruins software. That relative I talked about? She may not be computer-savvy, but she damn well knew how to configure Thunderbird 2 the way she wanted it. Now she needs to call me for tech support. Good job on that UI design, guys. Good job. – Arancaytar, on January 17, 2010 23:40
