Does jolicloud come with Java?
I tried to install an add-on to thunderbird that requires java. I looked in /usr/bin, but do not see java. Does jolicloud come with java, or will java install? has anyone done so successfully?

Hello,
If you install applications depending on Java, you will get the Java runtime at the same time. However, if you need to manually install the Java runtime, below is the command you can enter in a Terminal:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts
When the installation begins, you will get a screen which displays the Sun Operating System Distributor License for Java. Press Enter to validate and complete the installation.

Inappropriate?I had the problem but solved. Access the control panel and go to the synaptics manager. Then highlight the java plugin for installation. When you have done that Java works

Inappropriate?I can't find Synaptic anywhere. Do I need to do this from the command line?
I’m bemused

Inappropriate? You can access the Synaptic package manager through the control centre. You may not be able to see this either. To get the control panel click on the preferences tab and then open the system folder in the left hand window. Tick the control centre app and it will then appear in your Home screen. Mine appeared in accessories (Dont know why!)
I’m confident

Inappropriate?I don't get a System folder in the Preferences tab, but I started Synaptic from a Terminal session and installed the JRE, so all good.
There are a few obvious things that Jolicloud doesn't yer seem to do or have, like access to Synaptic by default, that would make it easier for a power user. At this point, I'm guessing that term applies to most Jolicloud users.
I’m getting there

Inappropriate?I think it would make 100% sense to have Java and the firefox plugin installed by default in jolicloud. There are many webbased applications that require Java, not least access to some online banking. (in my case the live timing of formula1.com is the most important ;)))
I’m amused

Inappropriate?Synaptic and the Update Manager can be installed in the Administration tab with some work. Just be aware the Software Sources application does not work under Jolicloud.
-
Inappropriate?Well the answer is NO. You can install it from synaptic & You can also run synaptic from command line
Run terminal
$ sudo synaptic
should work -
Inappropriate? To NormanF. Could you perhaps make some hints about installing synaptics under the administration tab?

Inappropriate?I'm trying to run bibledesktop, it needs java and I've tried this and it doesn't work. It says java is not configured correctly. I installed it once before and didn't write down what i did. Foolish, Java seems so hard to install on jolicloud, can't even get root access.
Is there a solution or off topic but anyone have a free bible software they use for on jolicloud? I'm surprised there's no app yet on the cloud site.
Thanks in advance!
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts
I tried this on my HP mini 1000 and my computer hangs at the license agreement. Any hints?
Dave -
Inappropriate? What do you mean by 'hanging'?
Maybe, you just have to use the [Tab] key to get the focus on the 'OK' button. -
Inappropriate?By hanging, I mean that I can't get past the license agreement by pressing enter.
I'll try the tab key - thanks
Dave
I’m good, learning
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for the "tab" key tip. Java works perfectly now! (HP 1000 mini)
Dave
I’m doing great
-
Inappropriate? Thanks, I am still having a problem using A drive as it says Java not installed (BTW in Chrome, havent tested Firefox yet).
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Sorted it out, if your using Chrome you first have to run it in Firefox and accept the plugin.
I’m happy
