Why is Flock crashing all of a sudden?
Flock has been crashing everytime I start it. I've downloaded the newest version and it still crashes once I try to do anything. I used Flock for several months before I had any trouble (my operating system is Vista). I had the same trouble with Firefox for a short bit (though it took longer for it to happen and only when I tried to re-download Flock). Firefox is stable now. Was wondering what is causeing this.

Inappropriate? There has been problems with Flock crashing lately, and most of those problems have been solved by deleting a "lucene" folder in the Flock profile. Lucene is used to index search results so the search flyout can show recently visited sites. Deleting the lucene folder only deletes this index and won't affect anything else.
So, here are the steps:
1. Close Flock entirely (make sure there's no flock.exe process running).
2. On Windows XP go Start -> Run... and write %appdata% in the field.
On Windows Vista write %appdata% to the Search field on the bottom of the Start menu.
3. Browse to "Flock" -> "Browser" -> "xxxxxxxx.default"
4. Delete the folder called "lucene".
I’m confident

"Lucene is used to index search results so the search flyout can show recently visited sites. Deleting the lucene folder only deletes this index and won't affect anything else." And also does not affect a solution to the crashing in Windows XP SP4 - this has been going on for a long, long time. -
Inappropriate?Hi Nate & BootedEagle,
Often Flock crashes, when I am looking on TV or a Video clip. To avoid crashes, I do at least a defrag of my system drive (C:) before looking at the video, and if the video is long, I sometimes do a defrag in the middle of it. By doing so, Flock seldom crashes! I have not yet tried to delete the folder : "lucence"
Best Regards,
sweidre

Inappropriate? The problem also exists on Linux (Fedora 10), both the latest "stable" version and the latest tinderbox version. There's a segmentation fault in the distributed Mozilla binary.

Inappropriate?Frankly, I would be surprised to see anyone respond from the Flock team - so far, nothing.

Inappropriate?Hi Dan,
Flock can crash for many reasons. We have fixed the issue with Lucene corrupting files, so the chances of it being your issue are fairly small.
Under what circumstances does Flock crash for you? Is it consistently reproducible?
Also, if you have not already, I recommend downloading the latest version of Flock, 2.5.1, from our site. That could fix your issue.
Thanks, and sorry that Flock is crashing for you!
~Cam -
ALL. YES. Had 2.5.1 before I came here. -
Inappropriate?Dan,
"All" does not really help me understand the situation. Does Flock run for a set amount of time, and then crash? Does it shut down at random intervals? Does it start and crash instantly? Does it start at all? I need to know more, or I simply can not advise you with any accuracy.
Thanks,
~Cam -
Inappropriate? When you asked under what circumstances, ALL is the most correct answer. There is no time yet where it wont crash. It crashes consistently as soon as the welcome and "thankyou for downloading and installing 2.5.1" page has fully loaded - no sooner than that. I send a crash report (crash reported runs after each crash). AppName: flock.exe AppVer: 1.9.0.3493 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.5781 Offset: 00012afb
That is about all I have so far. -
Inappropriate?Dan,
In your profile, find your flock-data.sqlite file and rename it flock-data-backup.sqlite, then run Flock and see if it works.
Also, have you tried running Flock in safe mode?
Thanks,
~Cam -
Safe mode got me to at elast get the "Update Plugins/Addons" screen. -
There is no such file named "flock-data.sqlite" anywhere within the whole installed folder of the program. Would it be in the usually hidden folder, "Application Data"? -
Dan, correct, the Flock profile folder is located (in Win XP) in the "Application Data" folder. Find the location here: http://www.flock.com/faq/show/64#q_387 -
Inappropriate?Upgraded to 2.5.1 this morning. Crashed 4 times in a row while in Facebook chat from the Flock status bar.

Inappropriate?Hi Mardondil,
Do you have any extensions? If so, could you please disable them all and then run Flock? If it does not crash, enable them all one by one to find the culprit.
Thanks, and sorry you're experiencing this issue!

Inappropriate?Flock has been crashing (freezing and then "Not Responding") on me intermittently throughout the day, on a daily basis, for a little over a week. I don't use Flock for anything outside of social networks, blogs, email. (I use different browsers for other things.) I rarely even watch videos or stream music, but when I do I haven't experience a crash. From what I can tell I'm not triggering it in any way as the crash will happen on various sites during various times of the day, regardless if I have 1 tab open or 10.
After the crash I'll attempt to restart Flock and it takes up to a minute. Sometimes I think I didn't actually open it up so I'll load it a second and even a third time. After multiple tries it will finally open, but in multiple windows depending on how many times I tried opening it. I've tried being patient and just waiting for the first time to load, but it never does until I try to load it a few more times.
I have the most updated version (2.5) running it on Windows Vista. No extensions.
EDIT: I opened up Flock a few minute ago and went to flock.com. Then I opened up another browser to actually post this comment (as I did not want Flock to crash on me during my explanation!), then went back to Flock and it was "Not Responding"... even though I had simply opened it and went to one website! What gives? -
Inappropriate?Update: STILL CRASHING. I know for a fact now that I cannot possibly be triggering it unless switching to another program or browser upsets Flock in some way. Again I just opened up Flock, navigated to Facebook's log in page (didn't even log in yet), then I got an email in Thunderbird so I went to check it and replied, came back to Flock (no more than 2 minutes later) and it was frozen and not responding.

Inappropriate?HI Thepanic,
Could you please find your profile folder, and the file flock-data.sqlite, and rename it backup-flock-data.sqlite, and then run Flock.
Does this help?
Thanks,
~Cam -
flock-data.sqlite does not exist -
Marcus,
What OS are you on? I can assure you that it does in fact exist; Flock cannot function without it. Have you followed the directions in the above link exactly?
Thanks,
~Cam -
Cam: The file does not exist on my linux system. I searched the ENTIRE filesystem and that file is nowhere. If you tell me where it is supposed to be, I can create a file by that name. But, that file is nowwhere and it is not being created when I start up flock. -
Hello David,
Sorry to hear the frustration. I would like to know whether you can access the .flock folder under /home/[UserDictionary]
If yes, the flock-data.sqlite is located at /home/[UserDictionary]/.flock/browser/[SomeRandomNumber].default/
If not, please locate where the .flock is because the flock-data.sqlite is under the .flock dictionary.
Thanks,
Patricia -
Patricia: OK, I found it there. Not sure why locate didn't look in .flock, but I found the file. I renamed it, restarted flock, and it promptly crashed. So, this does not solve my problem. It is EXTREMELY frustrating as I have no idea why it crashes or what I can do to prevent it from crashing. Sometimes it will go for two hours before crashing and sometimes it will be just a matter of second. There is no warning and I have not noticed a pattern of that might be a trigger for the crash. Is there an error or crash log somewhere? That would be nice as I could then maybe track down what is causing this!!
Dave H -
Hello David,
Thank you for the reply. The log file is located under the /[SomeRandomNumber].default folder. Please check it from there. Also, you can view the console log from Tools ->Error Console(Ctrl+Shift+J).
I hope that helps,
Patricia -
I do not see a log in that folder:

Inappropriate?Flock kept crashing on me this Morning unable to update or be on longer than a few seconds a min tops.
I followed instructions and deleted the Lucene file and was able to get back on to upgrade on to 2.5.2 .................running fine now thanks Flock for the update and for everyone here that helped with their posts! Louis

Inappropriate?I've been getting the random crash problem on a 64bit version of OpenSuSE 11.2. I've tried every solution suggested here and even tried deleting my installation and installing fresh, several times. None of the upgrades fix the problem. It's incredibly frustrating as I really like some of the features in flock, but if it keeps crashing, I can't use it.
Why can't you guys fix this problem?!? It seems I'm not alone and it seems that it is not OS specific.
I’m frustrated!
