Separate "standard" and "pro" versions to attract more customers
Having evaluated DM2 I have to admit it's a really nice piece of software! The only issue I have with it is the rather high price tag. I appreciate the "pro" features like iSight and bar code scanning but I'd really like to see a basic and pro edition. Have a look at Apple's app store: it's incredible how many great apps are offered for 10-20$. This might sound too cheap at first (to cover all expenses) but I can imagine such a move could get you lots more customers - you'd cross an important psychological threshold that currently prevents potential customers from actually buying your product - like me...
Please consider offering two versions: one without the pro features (iSight, bar code, bonjour sharing, voice search?) at a reduced price and the currently available "pro" version.

Inappropriate? This, to me, doesn't make a lot of sense. Take away the magic and what do you have? a catalogueing bit of software that actually is a pain to use. It's main utility is its ability to deal with a large number of bar codes in a usually efficent manner. Delicious Monster is developing a library program with high-end functions. I see no problem with them charging a high-end price... which they're not really doing. Seen the price of Bento lately? And YOU have to write the database.
I’m a bit confused

I'm not complaining about the price for the current version. It's absolutely justified for the product you get. I'm just of the opinion that one could reach a much broader range of customers with almost the same product. Not everyone needs the high-end features and might therefore not be willing to pay the price. A reduced feature set for reduced price would target an *additional* audience... -
Inappropriate?Hrmm.. the problem with this is that to make a scaled down version, we would actually have to do more work. Since the product we sell is not something physical, we aren't charging for the MBs of data you download for us; we are charging because we spend many hours coding and answering forums, and that's how much it costs to keep our company alive. If we put in extra hours to scale down, launch, and support a cheaper version of DL2, that wouldn't make a ton of sense for us, business-wise =\

Hi Jessie,
I'm a software developer myself and I don't consider this a huge effort - just disable a few "pro" features and have a distinct registration option to enable them. This way you'd still have to support just one product.
My main point is that larger sales numbers (due to reduced price / keep in mind the threshold I mentioned above) will eventually generate more revenue and profit, I thusly still think that this makes sense business-wise indeed.
Anyway, it's just an idea, however, worth considering... -
Inappropriate?XTMHSNFOMKFE- Well... to be quite honest, we have pretty large sales numbers as it is :-)
