How much will TotalFinder be?
Pretty straightforward. How much is this awesome software going to cost?

Inappropriate?Good question! I'm sorry but I don't have straightforward answer yet. I have to ask some biz people to help me set the price for this. Honestly, I've never done this before and I don't want to make it wrong from the beginning.
First I'm going to build a great product then I'll try to think about making money of it.
Personally I would think $15 is a fair price. Because I would probably get $10 into my pocket after taxes and merchant fees. But did no research on it yet.
As of licensing I'd like to use dual license:
1) per-user = use it on as many machines you want while you are the only user using this license of TotalFinder
2) per-machine = use it on one machine, unlimited number of users
You may freely switch between those two. It is the same model like Servant Salamander uses and I like it.
If there is a demand maybe I'll add some other type of licensing or discounts.
And one last note. If you happen to be an author of some open-source product I've used for TotalFinder or you happen to have email ending with @google.com you will get a license for free.
I'm open for suggestions. Thanks!
I’m excited

As a former Apple employee I would definitely push a comp license their way too. It's a great way for Apple employees and enthusiasts to use and talk about your product. -
I am hoping these licensing fees will be a one time charge. As in lifetime upgrades without having to repurchase when the next major release comes out. -
Inappropriate?$15... eh? Will there be any way to try this technology out before I fork out? I am excessively intrigued by the idea, but I'd like a couple weeks to try it out (after it is considered stable and reliable [at least beta]) and see if it suits my needs in the way that I hope it will. This idea is LONG overdue.
Tabbed browsing has been around for years! Why not a tabbed Finder!?
Well done, sir! Bravo. -
Sure, there will be one month trial on final product. -
Inappropriate? The licensing seems good. Since I use 2 machines - Laptop on the road end a Mac Pro at home.

Inappropriate?Hi Antonin-
$15.00 for a TotalFinder license is a fair price. If possible, try to set your store up so you can be paid via PayPal.
Cheers. -
So, Antonin set your price! The current version of Total Finder is very cool and should start generating revenue for you. Yes, it's THAT good! cheers. -
Inappropriate?Heck, for something I'd use essentially "all the time" $20 is the new $15.

Inappropriate?Hi guys,
I like this Echelon-DS_Store redirecting, in fact, this is my reason for decision to purchasing Total Finder ;) I'm a console guy, and these files are really driving me nuts!
But I'm wondering: How is it handled, if I decide to purchase the single-user, multiple-machine license and other users are working on my Mac? Do they splatter my directories with .DS_Store files, cause Total Finder does not work for them, or is the redirecting kernel module always "up"?
I think 15$ is a fair fee, but I'd like to see a multiple-user, multiple-machine license... even if the fee is bigger then, maybe 25$? Btw. I second the demand for Paypal support...
Totally awaiting the first stable release!
Best regards!
-
Hi Sebastian. I'm also a console guy and .DS_Store redirection was my original motivation to start hacking on Finder :-)
I believe in something like fair use. I don't want to complicate things so TotalFinder will always install system-wide for all users. I don't want to be solving issues caused by switching users or by user-specific configurations. I want to spend my time more productively than solving these issues.
If your mom or sister do not care much about TotalFinder it is ok they are using your single-user license. Maybe just if they would probably buy it without you buying it you may just tell them "hey, you should maybe send that guy 15 bucks if you are going to use this intensively".
That's all. Don't worry, I will be glad when you love that product so much that you send me your own $15 :-)
Have a nice day! -
Inappropriate?Nice licensing model. I like it. I would be willing to pay more, even, if some sort of plugin architecture would allow plugins (or scripts) to take over the handling of lister-panes' contents. Also OpenMeta is such a valuable need for me.

Inappropriate?$15 will be the price, i guess - that would me too much for me, because i use disc order for file handling. so, total finder won't be used that much.
I’m thinking

Inappropriate?Just my two cents... Remember that Apple created a multi-billion dollar App,music store on ¢99. And Sam Walton (Wal-Mart) would be richer then Bill Gates if he was still alive based on volume. With those in mind, sometimes money can be made in Volume versus other models. Ie. License to Apple/University/Big Corp. for ¢99 each machine, combined they install it on 250,000 machines... you've made $250,000 but charge $15 per machine and NONE of these companies will use it, simply out of their budget, so you've made $5,000~ off individuals. Seriously don't let the now cloud the bigger picture.
-
Inappropriate?Charles - I guess thats for him to decide on volume licensing. Just keep up the good work and we shall see. Dual tabs is great and really innovative. So if more stuff like that gets in to the release I could see the price being $15. At its current feature set though its a little to much.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? When you do you anticipate this program will be fully out of the Beta phase, for an official release?
Also, would a one time purchase mean free future upgrades or do you plan to charge for upgrades ?
It's a lovely program. Installed it minutes ago--even though I don't usually buy software, relying mostly on freeware, I think I'll have to buy it. -
I'm aiming for 1.0 release at end of the March. You'll then get one extra month for trial. -
Inappropriate?Hey friends, thanks for good discussion about pricing here.
I was trying to bootstrap my own indie dev company with HashPage project more than year ago. But I didn't manage to finish something which could generate enough interest and money to continue. Also I paid quite terrible price in terms of "social debt". I had to return to contract work, make some money and get my life in order a little bit. I guess other bootstrappers out there know what I mean.
I agree, TotalFinder started more as a hack than well-thought business plan. It is quite risky business anyway. Apple may decide to kill whole thing any minute. But I was surprised how popular it got during last month. Now I believe revenues from this tool may help me go indie. It enables me improving TotalFinder over time and possibly working on other interesting software instead of doing client work. I have tons of promising ideas.
Do you want me to work on projects like TotalFinder or another client-driven website/CMS/whatever? I want you to look at your $15 also as an investment into future products from BinaryAge. That would be cool. Thanks!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I'm definitely voting for TotalFinder. As a new Apple convert, I find Finder to be quite cumbersome compared to Explorer. While there are some other file managers around, I like that TotalFinder integrates itself into the Finder itself and addresses many of the inefficiencies I find in Finder.
Great to hear it's been getting more attention the last month. I found out about this program from a "Daily Tip" video from a video podcast called Tekzilla, just today. Hopefully it results in more traffic sent your way. -
Inappropriate?$15.00 for a TotalFinder license is a fair price. I like it!!!
Store with PayPal please
I’m happy and thankful

Inappropriate?I've shied away from things like PathFinder because of it's extreme "mod-heavy" nature, and put very few third-party system mods on b/c I need to keep my Mac as close to as Apple envisioned it b/c I'm in the business of convincing people to buy Macs.
That said, this mod seems to have the perfect balance of UI proximity to the original and usefulness (I would imagine tabs are due in 10.7 eh?)...I will be following the alpha and beta builds closely. -
Inappropriate?Once all of the bugs are worked out, and I'm assuming they will be by the time this exits beta and becomes a paid program, I'd gladly pay $15. $20 would be a little steep, but possible, but $15 seems like a no-brainer, so I agree that is a good price. Great little program already, btw!

Inappropriate?9.95 $ would be a fair price for this extension. But the bugs have to be worked out. Important too: Payment via Paypal!
I’m satisfied
-
Inappropriate?€ 9,50 would also be good as price, but to be honestly, €15 seems to be ok too. I agree: develop a stable rock-solid version on which to rely (with slow-growing features) and there will be many fans to follow your app.
PS:
PayPal appreciated!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I also think $10 or so would be a more appropriate price for the features included in this program, but if the features available expand a bit more, then I'd go for $15 for sure.
-
Inappropriate?I love the featuers of the program, ok, 14.95 $ would be ok. But I don't wanna see any bug any more ;-)
I’m satisfied

Inappropriate? This is an interesting read about software pricing models, and I think its spot on.
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2009...
Personally, I buy *lots* of software on my iPhone when it's priced at no more than a couple of $, but I never/rarely buy software for the PC or Mac due to the price. If your app where to sell for a couple of $, I'd buy it in the blink of an eye, however priced at $15-$25, I'd probably not bother. - and don't take this the wrong way, because your software looks very good.
